FREE ADMISSION TO APPLETON MUSEUM OF ART DURING ‘HOLIDAY HAPPENING’ EVENT ON THURSDAY, DEC. 11, 5-8 P.M.

(OCALA, Fla.) Nov. 21, 2008 … Get into the spirit of the holidays with free admission to the Appleton Museum of Art of College of Central Florida during the Holiday Happening event scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11.  The evening program includes live performances by costumed carolers, samplings of tasty treats, 15% discount on merchandise in the Museum Shop and self-guided tours of the museum’s art galleries and newest exhibition – “Winslow Homer In America.”   Regular admission to the museum is $12 for a family of two adults and accompanying children, $6 for adults, $4 for seniors (55 or better) and students 19 and over, $3 for youths (age 10-18), and free for children age nine and under and CF students.

During Holiday Happening on Dec. 11 the Appleton’s Museum Shop offers a unique holiday gift shopping experience with 15% off all regularly priced merchandise including estate jewelry with rings of semi-precious stones of turquoise, lapis, coral and pearls in various settings and sizes.  Other items on sale include prints of art work, art-inspired umbrellas with matching fashion tote bags, 2009 calendars and specialty greeting cards, games, children’s books and CDs.

In addition, live entertainment for Holiday Happening will be provided by the Wings of Faith Fellowship choir under the direction of Kevin Christian.  The 20-person choir will present a series of a cappella performances of traditional holiday music.

The Appleton Museum’s current exhibition -- “Winslow Homer In America” – is open through Jan. 18, 2009, and features 125 fine art wood engravings produced by Winslow Homer between the 1850s and 1880s.  One of America’s most celebrated artists of the 19th century, Winslow Homer’s engravings depicted scenes of everyday American life and were used to inform and entertain readers of such national publications as Harper’s Weekly, The Galaxy, Every Saturday and The Appleton Journal.

In addition, the Appleton Museum of Art displays European, American, Asian, African, Contemporary and Pre-Columbian works of art and artifacts in its permanent collection galleries. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays and closed on Mondays.  In addition to daily admission, an annual membership is also available and includes year-round admission, special events and members-only programs.  Owned and operated by College of Central Florida, the Appleton Museum of Art is located at 4333 E.
