(OCALA, Fla.) April 21, 2009 … May will feature the new “Playing Around” exhibition, After Hours performance by Ya’Gozo, The Latin Jazz Band, an Italian Renaissance-themed Family Day event and other programs at the Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College.

Daily admission is $6 for adults; $4 for seniors 55 or better and students 19 and over; $3 for youths ages 10-18; and free for members, CF students, children age 9 and under, and active military personnel and their immediate families.

“Playing Around At The Appleton: Whimsical Art from the Permanent Collectionswill showcase whimsical contemporary, surreal and pop art that explodes in colors, shapes and sizes. On display will be rarely seen works by such noted artists as Alexander Calder, Kenny Scharf, Iain Baxter, Robert Cenedella, David Williams and Salvador Dali. The show will run through June 7.

On May 8, the Appleton’s After Hours program will present Ya’Gozo, The Latin Jazz Band performing the rich flavor of rhythms and musical styles from Latin, Funk and Smooth Jazz to Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and Caribbean. Doors open at 5 p.m. and music begins at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

The 6th Congressional District Art Show will be a collection of juried student artwork exhibited in the Balcony Gallery from May 9 to 24. An Italian Renaissance-themed Family Day will be presented May 30 with live music, children’s theater, make-it-and-take-it art projects and games. Also offered in May will be a Saturday Art Craft event from 10:30 a.m. to noon on May 2 and a Creative Educators Day on May 16 (pre-registration required for both events at 352-291-4455, ext. 1613). A series of educational films on the visual arts will be shown each Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The Appleton Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays and closed on Mondays. In addition to daily admission, a 12-month membership is available for $25 for seniors 55 and over, $30 for adults 18 and over, $40 for two seniors over age 55, $50 for a family of two adults and any children under age 18, and $15 for all college students and current or retired educators.
