(OCALA, Fla.) Dec. 19, 2011— "For the Love of the Sea: Watercolors of Philip Steel" will open Jan. 21 as the first temporary exhibition of 2012 at the Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida. On exhibit will be more than 40 original watercolors by this award-winning New England artist.
Daily admission to the Appleton Museum is $6 for adults; $4 for seniors 55 or better and students 19 and over; $3 for youths ages 10-18; and free for members, CF students, children age 9 and under, and active military personnel and their immediate families.
Steel's nautical paintings reflect his vast knowledge of the ocean and respect for those who make a living from the sea. His paintings of seascapes dramatically capture the power and excitement of wind and waves, the ever-changing play of light on water, the tension of a sail's rigging and the movements of a boat's crew. He has studios in Southwest Harbor, Maine, and Fort Pierce, and is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists, the Florida Watercolor Society and a Fellow Member of the American Artist Professional League.
In addition to temporary exhibitions, the Appleton Museum of Art showcases a permanent collection of European, American and contemporary art, plus Asian, African, Islamic and pre-Columbian artifacts and antiquities. The Appleton Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
