Thursday, June 5, 5-9 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 1:30 p.m. This exuberant documentary introduces viewers to the lively world of tap dance as interpreted by three acknowledge masters: Honi Coles, Will Gaines and Chuck Green. Dance styles showcase the heady of the 1930 as well as bebop. Much of the documentary is narrated by Coles, who relates his own story as well as those of other great tap dancers. Historical footage gives viewers a feel for the evolution of this lively form of dance. (61 min.) Friday, June 13, 4 p.m. Friday, June 13, 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14 The collective works of the four artists showcased in the 2008 Appleton Biennial is the perfect summer exhibition. The juried exhibition began in 2004 as a way to showcase regional artists who offer a fresh perspective on traditional subjects and materials. To date, the biennials have highlighted the works of 25 extraordinary artists including the four whose works are now showcased: Ron Haase of Melrose, Bill James of Ocala, Joyce McAdams of Edgewater and Steffen Mittelhaeuser of Port Orange.
Cicily Tyson stars in this highly acclaimed drama based on the best selling novel by Ernest J. Gaines. On her 110th birthday, Miss Pittman, a former slave, reminisces about the black experience of picking potatoes on a southern plantation and carrying water to Civil War soldiers and presents her view on the heating up of the Civil Rights Movement. Sunday, June 22, 1:30 p.m. This controversial operetta created by the Gershwin tells the story, set in a fictitious black waterfront tenement called Catfish Row in South Carolina, is a story of poverty and lives gone wrong due to the effects of alcohol, drugs and prostitution.
