Powered Flight: The First 100 Years, 1903- 2003 is more than an exhibition of art and artifacts which highlights state, national, and international developments that helped shape the past 100 years of aviation history; this is an exhibition of the personal history of the invention and engineering and daring begun by the Wright Brothers and advanced by individuals who eventually came to call Central Florida home.
Visitors to the exhibit will experience hardware from the Fantasy of Flight Museum, original cartoon illustrations from Zack Mosley’s Smilin’ Jack, paintings by Florida artists and novelist Jack Hunter (author of the Blue Max), airplane models, and memorabilia. “Then and Now” photographs of Ocala airfields where WWII pilots were trained are also included in the display.
The Ocala region is rich in aviation history. Drawing from the knowledge, experience, and fame of the residents of flight communities from around the region, the Appleton has assembled a robust list of programs to complement this exhibition. The lineup includes a presentation from the test pilot who made the first flight of the A-6 Intruder, F-14A Tomcat, and Gulfstream II and III; a member of the famed Tuskegee Airman; a three-time international champion acrobatic pilot from the former Soviet Union; and a 12-part film series on video ranging from The Great Waldo Pepper to Top Gun to Apollo 13.
Additional paintings by Jack Hunter (whose works are featured in the Appleton exhibition) are concurrently displayed at the St. Augustine Historical Society’s Page L. Edwards Gallery and at the St. Augustine Art Association through January 30, 2004. We are grateful to the St. Augustine Historical Society for their collaboration in bring the work of Mr. Hunter to the Appleton
