Intimate Impressions: European Prints from the Collection of Drs. Ashley and Michele White
Saturday, December 18, 2004 through Sunday, February 27, 2005
This exhibit illustrates the original artwork of Cézanne, Degas, Monet, Manet, Renoir, and Pissarro among others that were published as plates in Theodore Duret’s Die Impressionisten (1899) and Manet and the French Impressionists (1910). French critic Duret was blessed with a long life and a family cognac business that enabled him to pursue his interests in art and politics. After meeting Manet in Madrid in 1865, Duret began a close relationship with many of the Impressionist painters. Not only did Duret write books and critiques, but he also helped organize the sale of works from Manet’s studio after his death. Many of the Impressionist painters actually painted Duret’s portrait.
