The Appleton Museum of Art’s virtual book club meets once a month on Zoom to discuss works of nonfiction that have been hand selected by Appleton staff. The June meeting will discuss “The Art of Rivalry: Four Friendships, Betrayals, and Breakthroughs in Modern Art” by Sebastian Smee.

Led by Museum Educator Hollis Mutch, the book club is open to everyone. Participation is free and easy! Buy or borrow the book and read at your own pace. Register for the Appleton Book Club meeting on Eventbrite. Login details for the Zoom session on June 8 will be sent in your confirmation email.

About this book: Pulitzer Prize–winning art critic Sebastian Smee tells the fascinating story of four pairs of artists — Manet and Degas, Picasso and Matisse, Pollock and de Kooning, Freud and Bacon — whose fraught, competitive friendships spurred them to new creative heights.
