Arthur I. Appleton served in the United States Navy during World War II and collected paintings and model ships featuring historic sailing ships. The works span the 19th and 20th centuries and feature British artists William Adolphus Knell, Captain Richard Brydges Beechey, Henry Scott and Montague Dawson.
